President’s Corner 11.19.2024
Greetings Neighbors:
In last month’s “Presidents Corner”, I alluded to the fact that the Holiday Season was on the horizon, well here it is. Your SSCA is taking this opportunity to wish the entire South Shores Community a very Happy Thanksgiving. This has been an exciting year, many issues have come and gone, several controversial, but so far, we all have survived.
As a nation we honored our Veterans, exercised our privilege to vote, your Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series and as a Nation we survived. Therefore, let our political differences be respected even while sports rivalries remain passionate. We must remain diligent, informed and remember that, while we may differ on issues, “united we stand” is the proven way forward.
Our membership Goal for 2025 is 500 members, which is about a 10% increase from this year’s level. To help reach this goal, your SSCA has begun its new outreach of dispersing relevant information and time-sensitive news to both members and non-members alike. This South Shores/San Pedro news summation will be periodically posted on our website as well as sent via email and MailChimp. Please watch for these updates and, as always, we’ll look forward to – and appreciate -your feedback.
Upcoming news:
- We’re moving SSCA into the computer age. Our present membership system – both for you and for us – is based on pencils, erasers and snail mail. In order to simplify everyone’s life a new membership platform is being prepared and will be introduced soon. Watch for” JoinIt” on our website and in your email. And don’t be afraid if you’re not computer-savvy – the snail-mail option will still be there…
- The Sociables continues to march on with its next scheduled get together January 11th.
- Returning once again is the Coffee in the Cul-de-Sac, December 13.
- Holiday lights schedule:
- Judging begins December 16
- Recommendation & voting December 17
- Winners announced December 20
- Prizes awarded January 3, 2025
- As in the past there will be four winners. All residents are eligible, i.e., SSCA members and non-members. Last year’s first place winner is NOT eligible to repeat. GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!
- The 25th & Western coffee shop project has started the demolition of the old Bank of America building. New signage is scheduled for December 15.
- Two area realtors – HH Coastal and D’Amico realty – will be hosting separate, but equally important food drives & Toys for Tots Christmas gift drives, December 5th and 7th respectfully. See our website for additional details www.southshooresca.org.
The 2025 Membership Drive is officially underway. Remember, dues are now $25 per calendar year.
Consequently, the earlier you sign up the better the value. Membership is offered on a yearly basis, so if you join now, you get 13 months for the price of 12. As part of the new “JoinIt” system mentioned above, you can expect to see QR codes on officers’ business cards, publicly displayed signs, our website and in emails. Scanning the QR code will simplify your joining and paying process and simplify our lives in tracking SSCA’s many members.
Nothing new to report on the 25th & Paseo Del Mar “mini-park” project, other than solicitations will be forthcoming in order to fund this project if City funds are not available.
SSCA is requesting that all residents consider sending a Letter of support for “Draft #3 CHIP” to Councilman McOsker. (This has to do with zoning changes, and our desire to keep San Pedro the single-family neighborhood it is. https://www.southshoresca.org/2024/11/26/next-step-send-letters-to-council-members-copy
SSCA is also in the process of drafting a letter to those in our neighborhood whose property may need some sprucing up, politely encouraging them to do so, offering them the possibility of support as well as information on where to go to get assistance if needed.
The SSCA website is an important source for information, news and activities. We make every effort to keep the site regularly updated with local events, announcements and issues of concern and affect our neighborhood and community. I urge you to visit the SSCA website at www.southshoresca.org or www.southshoresca.org/membership/join.
Please take the time to print this form, fill it out and mail it back to the SSCA. Be sure to include your current email address & phone number. Email is the primary source of communication with our members.
Respectfully,
Richard F. Scandaliato
