Presidents Corner 9-15-2024

Thank you ALL who attended the SSCA Annual Members Only Reception. As it was last year attendance was enthusiastic, interactive, accommodating and most of all enjoyed the afternoon. Our guest speakers; LA Supervisor Janice Hahn, Councilman Tim McOsker, Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi, provided insight, answered a plethora of questions, and did not avoid controversial issues. Not to be forgotten is the excellent food, courteous staff and beautiful venue of the Elks Lodge.

There were as many accolades for the allotted time consumed by the speakers, as there was criticism, however, I would say that it was an overall success. We promise to reevaluate both the Business Meeting and Annual Reception in order to come up better programming.

A more detailed account of the meeting can be found on our website www.southshoresca.org under the heading “September 15 minutes”. Following John Tymczyszyn financial report, John Lang gave a brief, but informative report on the increasing pressure by those in Sacramento to change local zoning laws, (again please see our website under the category United Neighbors). Bob Genest was his usual dynamic self while discussing CyberWatch and provided information on acquiring a faraday pouch as a means of thwarting would be car thieves. Glen Lightfoot, spoke of the Sociables group. A sign-up table was available for CyberWatch, Sidewalk Brigade and Sociables.

As we close in on the holiday season, please watch for information for the Holiday Lights contest, additional coco in the Cul de Sac events.

Before closing, I would add that at the in my opening comments and introductions, I mentioned both my frustration and disappointment in the inability of the SSCA to grow in number and as a result not communicate effectively with the remaining South Shore residents. With a population of 1,300 households, and a membership of 488 there are almost 800 who for whatever reason do not get important and timely messages. There were several suggestions put forth that will be properly vetted. As previously mentioned, in last months “Presidents Corner”, the SSCA need to do a better more comprehensive job in communication to South Shores at large, be they members, non-members, but to ALL residents. Please if there any ideas out there, share them with us. I promise that any idea will be given proper consideration. I promise and commit to making this a priority that is both effective and financially responsible.

The proposed 25th and Western Starbucks appeal was declined by the LA City Planning Commission, provided the developer comply with certain and specific conditions being met. The developer has indicated that all those conditions will be met and therefore, be fully compliant.

In other news, the proposed irrigation project on Paseo del Mar and Western Ave., has hit a “snag”, in that the city “complicators” have taken a simple request and made it more complicated that realized.

The SSCA website is a constant source for information, news and activities. I urge you to visit the SSCA website at www.southshoresca.org or www.southshoresca.org/membership/join.

Below, you will find the application and invoice. Members are welcome to join or renew throughout the year. Membership for 2024 remains at $20.00 but will increase to $25.00 effective January 1st 2025.

Please take the time to print this form, fill out and mail back to the SSCA. Be sure to include your email address & phone number. Email is the primary source of communications with our members.

Respectfully,

Richard F. Scandaliato, President SSA
